Feb. 25th- 28th

This week in the Cells and Systems unit students have explored diffusion and osmosis. They watched the Ameoba sisters video on Osmosis and started the Gummy Bear Osmosis Lab.  Information on this lab can be found under the Cells and Systems section of the blog. They will continue to work on the Gummy Bear Osmosis Lab on Monday/Tuesday and it will be handed during class. Students will have a quiz on topics 4-5 of Cells and Systems on Tuesday, March 12th.   Key words document can be found under the Cells and Systems section of the blog.

February 11- 13th

Students looked at the movie Hidden Figures in order to look at influential women in STEM ( Science, Technology, Art and Math). They then began a research project that will be due Monday, February 25th. Details for the project can be found under the Cells and Systems section of the blog. There will be a topic 1-3 test on Tuesday, February 26th. A revision topic list can be found under the Cells and Systems section of the blog.

January 28th -31st

Students had class time to complete the project " Cell Organelle Superhero Trading Cards" that are due Monday, January, 4th.   Link to the assignment and rubric can be found under the Cells and Systems section of the blog. Students moved onto a Cell Theory   research project in which they created a powerpoint including research of the Scientists who contributed to the Cell Theory.  The project and rubric can be found under the Cells and Systems section of the blog. Project is due Tuesday, January 5th.

January 21st- 25th

This week students explored the functions of the different organelles in both plant and animal cells. They created/labelled a foldable with the characteristics and definitions of the different organelles ( cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, vacuole, chloroplast, and cytoplasm). The details for this foldable can be found on the Cells and Systems page of this blog.         Once completed, students started a project called " Organelle Superhero Trading Cards". In this project students are creating a Superhero for the different organelles. Details can be found on the Cells and Systems page of this blog.  Monday, January 28th will be the class class students have to work on the project. It will be due the following Monday, February 4th.  https://saxton8science.blogspot.com/p/cells-and-systems.html

January 14th - 18th

This week students worked on the " Exquisite Corpse" project. Students created drawings of creatures where one student drew the head, a different student drew the torso, and another student drew the feet. They could not see what the other students drew. Once they got their drawings back they needed to complete stories the incorporated the 7 characteristics of living things:  movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition. ( MRS  GREN) The project outline and rubric can be found under the Cells and Systems page of this blog Projects are due Monday, January 21st. I3  ( I-Cubed)  Every Friday students are working through on a cross-curricular project called I-Cubed. Through this project students will be exploring the design process and creating and marketing their own inventions/innovations. Students have been exploring the difference between an innovation, invention, and a discovery. Task 1 is due Friday, January 25th...

January 8th - 11th

Welcome Back! This week students began the unit Cells and Systems. We discussed the 7 characteristics of living things and students had to complete an assignment called " Is a Candle Alive?". The write up for the assignment is due on Monday, January 14th if it was not completed in class.  The assignment is available on the Cells and Systems page of this blog. On this page you can also find the " I Can..." statements, assignments, review, notes and extra practice.
